Offshore cruising for the next generation
First published in 1994, “Handbook of Offshore Cruising” by Jim Howard is back with its second edition (April 2009, $29.95, Sheridan House).
Revised and updated by Charles J. Doane, the guide for those planning a trans-oceanic voyage gets a 21st-century facelift with a focus on updated technology.
The 468-page softcover addresses buying or building the boat, proper size for your needs, rig and hull design, spars and rigging, deck layout and equipment, and electronics, security and maintenance, among other topics.
Howard cruised the oceans for more than 25 years, often single-handed. He lives in Hawaii. Doane is an editor at Sail magazine.
