The Sea: An Anthology of Maritime Photography Since 1843

How does one encapsulate something as vast and amorphous as the ocean? One photo at a time.

“The Sea: An Anthology of Maritime Photography Since 1843 ($75, Flammarion Publishing, 2009) by Pierre Borhan collects a series of 300 black-and-white and color photos in a hardcover binding with matching sleeve.

The book takes the reader on a journey that shows the ocean as a source of inspiration and the vehicle for many ambitious expeditions. It brings together photos from across the globe, out of time, showing perspectives from the top of the crow’s nest to the edge of the shore. Subjects range from lonely islands to abstract interpretations of majestic waves.

Borhan was previously the director of photography with the French Ministry of Culture and has commissioned several exhibitions throughout Europe. He is also author of “Man to Man: a History of Gay Photography.” For information, visit www.rizzoliusa.com.
