It all started with a trihull runabout built with the help of a few buddies. It was Alton Herndon's first boatbuilding project and, at 23 years old, he was hooked for life.
Herndon, 66, is now president of Bertram Yacht, which builds some of the toughest sportfishing boats in the world.

He took the helm of the company in early 2010 and orchestrated its historic move from Miami to Merritt Island, Fla., where Bertram plans to build bigger and better yachts.
