Sailor Todd Tholke was a hero Sept. 30 when he went out on San Francisco Bay at night and single-handedly saved the AC45 catamaran belonging to the French America’s Cup syndicate Energy.
The cat, which is in San Francisco for the America's Cup World Series, was at Piers 30-32 when its mooring line parted, according to a report in the San Francisco Chronicle. The unmanned boat drifted into the darkness and fetched up on the rocks of Treasure Island, where Tholke spotted it from shore.

Tholke pulled the cat off with his 14-foot Boston Whaler at 3:30 a.m., towed it to Treasure Isle Marina and handed it back to the French team.
The French were so grateful they offered to give Tholke a ride on the catamaran.
The ride was a nice gesture but apparently not enough. Tholke has filed a salvage claim on the high-tech racer to the tune of $200,000.
