VIDEO: Runaway boat

A crew from Britain’s Royal National Lifeboat Institution ran down and corralled an unmanned fishing boat last weekend as it circled under full throttle in Bude Bay off Cornwall, England.

Better yet, the boat rodeo was captured on video by an RNLI crewmember in the inflatable chasing the runaway boat.

A call came in to the lifeboat center at 7:54 a.m. last Sunday reporting two people in the water in Bude Bay. The Bude Lifeboat Station launched an inflatable with three aboard, a two-man PWC and another rescue boat with two aboard.

When the rescuers arrived, they recovered the skipper of a local fishing boat as surfers helped a second fisherman get to shore. The skipper told the lifeboat crew that his 25-footer was hit by a wave while leaving the harbor, throwing both men into the water.

The crew transferred him to another fishing boat and began to chase his runaway vessel, which was circling under full power and was in danger of running aground on the rocky coast.

They slowed the boat by tossing lines into its path to foul the props. Crewmembers then were able to jump aboard it and bring it under control.

“The call out was an unusual job for the crew of Bude Lifeboat, having to first slow the boat down using ropes and then boarding it,” operations manager Chris Cloke says. “It was a job that needed initiative and teamwork. Thanks to the rigorous training that the crew undertake, the situation had a successful outcome.”
