If you are interested in jumping into ocean racing , this might be your boat. Puma's Il Mostro, which finished second in the 2008-09 Volvo Ocean Race, is on the market.
Listed on its website as "Priced to sell ...!," the 70-foot racing vessel was built by Bristol, R.I.-based Goetz Custom Boats in 2008. The website says she was updated in 2010 while being used as a training platform and finished second in the Newport-Bermuda Race under Offshore Racing Rules.
"Il Mostro is the perfect platform for a team wishing to put together a late Volvo Ocean Race entry for the 2011 race or for a racing owner who wishes to compete in any type of offshore racing, both under handicap and as a course record breaker," the listing reads.
Meanwhile, Puma Ocean Racing skipper Ken Read announced in August that New England Boatworks Inc. of Portsmouth , R.I., will build Puma's new Volvo 70 for the 2011-2012 running of the Volvo Ocean Race. Valencia, Spain-based naval architecture firm Juan Yacht Design will provide the design.
Puma is scheduled to launch and begin sea trials in the spring out of the Newport Shipyard. The 39,000-nautical-mile Volvo starts in October in Alicante, Spain, and concludes in July 2012 in Galway, Ireland.
