Ron McKee, a lifelong friend and fishing partner, first met Bob Pond when he was 11 years old.

Bob Pond"I was delivering papers in town and I met him in a parking lot near his big blue van full of fishing gear," says McKee, 53. When young McKee asked Pond about fishing, the older man began throwing lures into a box. With each lure came an explanation of how to use it.

Buyers come out for smaller Providence show

Boaters had a mixed reaction to the condensed floor space at the 17th annual Providence Boat Show

For the first time, the boats and accessories were on one floor of the Rhode Island Convention Center.With dealers bringing fewer vessels to the show, the booth and exhibitor space was limited to one floor of the Rhode Island Convention Center.

Puma skipper named R.I. Boater of the Year

Puma Ocean Racing's skipper is Rhode Island's top boater.Newport, R.I., resident Ken Read, skipper and CEO of Puma Ocean Racing, second overall finisher of the 2008-09 Volvo Ocean Race, was named Rhode Island Boater of the Year by the Rhode Island Marine Trades Association at opening-day ceremonies of the Providence Boat Show.

Baptism in bell is a nod to tradition

With a long history at sea and a great enthusiasm for all things nautical, it was natural for Cameron Morgan to have his first child baptized in a ship's bell.

Baptizing their son in the ship's bell was a way for Cameron and Nicole Morgan to pass a love of the water on to Henry.Using the ship's bell as a baptismal font is an old naval tradition said to date back 200 years or so as a sign of good luck for the ship.
