For several years, Reuben Trane has wanted to build a fast cruising yacht in the 50-foot range with a huge master stateroom and a VIP stateroom worthy of master status. The Island Pilot 535 is that yacht.
A U.S. design with overseas appeal
An Irish boatbuilder is using a time-tested American design from the late John Atkin to launch his business.
"The goal with this boat was to create a center console that has a high-end finish and great seakeeping capabilities - and one that could go moderately fast without requiring two or three outboards that guzzle fuel," says Patrick Harrison, owner and operator of Harrison Boatworks, Roanoke Island, N.C.
Albemarle, the North Carolina builder known for its rugged fishing boats, has equipped its first boat - the 360 Express Fisherman - with Volvo Penta's Inboard Performance System.
"The early speed and fuel burn numbers we're seeing are amazing, and I think this adds another dimension to a model that has been extremely popular," says vice president and general manager Burch Perry.
Designed around cruising and fishing
Scout's new 34-foot center console is the South Carolina builder's second-largest boat. "There seems to be two center console worlds - the hardcore fishing world and the cruising world," says Scout Boats president Steve Potts. "We've married the two worlds with this design."
