Two missing off Long Island

The multi-agency search for two missing Queens, N.Y., men was suspended pending further information. The two men left for a fishing trip June 29. Concerned family contacted Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound to notify them July 2 of their overdue family members. The family believed the fishermen were in the Montauk area. The Coast Guard conducted search-and-rescue operations that day in the vicinity of Montauk, N.Y. On July 4, a family friend indicated the men were in the Wantagh Parkway area. Further investigation revealed the State Police had found the van used by the fishermen, without a canoe, at a parking area near Wantagh Bridge 3. The family then contacted the Coast Guard stating the vehicle had been impounded after being towed from the Wantagh State Parkway. The Coast Guard immediately launched a search effort using aircraft from the Nassau Police, Coast Guard Air Stations Cape Cod (Mass.), and Atlantic City (N.J.), and surface assets from the Coast Guard, New York State Police, New York State Park Police, Nassau County Police, Wantagh Fire Department and State Environmental Conservation Police. The incident was under investigation. (July 5)
