Swan freed from ice

Station Lorain, Ohio

Four members of Coast Guard Station Lorain, Ohio, enter the Black River to rescue a black swan whose leg and wing were frozen in the ice. The swan was freed by the station crew and transported to the Lake Erie Nature and Science Center in Bay Village, Ohio.Coast Guard Station Lorain rescued a black swan that was stuck in the ice near the Black River Railroad Bridge. The black swan was recovered by Coast Guard personnel and transferred to the Lake Erie Nature and Science Center in Bay Village, Ohio. Station Lorain was notified by the Black River Railroad Bridge operator that a duck was stuck in the river near the bridge.

HARD RIGHT – Crewmembers of Coast Guard Station Port Aransas, Texas, conduct training on the station's new 45-foot response boat Jan. 27. The RB-M, which will eventually replace the Coast Guard's aging fleet of 41-foot utility boats, is a self-righting, 45-foot aluminum boat with twin diesel engines and water jet propulsion. It includes multiple navigation displays, a wireless crew communication system, an infrared camera, shock mitigating seating and air conditioning. The RB-M also provides additional safety for the crew.

EXPLOSION ON BOARD — The fishing vessel Beau Vin burns after its captain was rescued Feb. 8 from a life raft by a good Samaritan off Wrightsville Beach, N.C. The man was rescued 20 minutes after making a mayday call to report an explosion on board his 60-foot fishing vessel 20 nautical miles from Masonboro Inlet. The captain of the Beau Vin abandoned ship into his life raft with an EPIRB. The captain of the Sea Swirl responded to a Coast Guard urgent marine information broadcast and came alongside the life raft to pick up Beau Vin’s captain. The captain escaped with only minor burns on his hands, according to the Coast Guard.

Two Rescued

The Coast Guard and Maine Marine Patrol rescued two fishermen Jan. 26 from the 44-foot fishing vessel Whistlin' Dixie, shown partially submerged about seven miles east of Biddeford Pool, Maine. The fishermen believe the boat struck a submerged object. They radioed for help then climbed into the vessel's life raft and a Maine Marine Patrol boat picked them up 14 minues later.
