Caught under Manhattan pier

Manhattan, N.Y.

A multiagency search was under way after a man was reportedly seen caught under a pier on East 90th Street in Manhattan. The Coast Guard was contacted by the New York Fire Department after it was alerted to a man caught under a pier in the East River by an unidentified caller using an emergency call box. The Coast Guard quickly responded by sending two 25-foot rescue boat crews to search the area. The New York Police Department had two rescue boats and a helicopter on scene, and the FDNY had rescue boats and a diver in the water. The case was still under investigation. (March 31)

Coast Guard tows four to safety

Station Wrightsville Beach, N.C.

The Coast Guard rescued four people from a sinking boat seven miles off Wrightsville Beach. Coast Guard Sector North Carolina watchstanders received a call from the boat and deployed two rescue boat crews from Station Wrightsville Beach to help them. The 47- and 25-foot rescue boats arrived and crews transferred all four people to safety. The 47-foot rescue boat towed the 20-foot pleasure boat to Wrightsville Beach Wildlife Boat Ramp. (April 4)

 UNITAS Gold Exercise

A sailor watches as U.S. Coast guard cutter Thetis pulls alongside the German navy combat support ship Frankfurt am Main. Maritime forces from Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Columbia, Ecuador, Germany, Mexico, Peru, U.S. and Uruguay are participating in UNITAS Gold, the 50th iteration of the annual multinational maritime exercise, which took place April 20 to May 5 off the Florida coast.

TANKER RESCUE

Two Italian yachtsmen were recently rescued in the Southern Ocean by the German-operated tanker Hellespont Trooper. The pair’s 34-foot yacht, Onitron, was dismasted April 8 about 3,500 miles west of the Southern tip of South America. Despite strong winds and a heavy swell, the vessel’s crew used a life raft to transfer the two men from the yacht to the tanker. The Hellespont Trooper was en route from New Zealand to Rivadavia, Argentina, but planned to divert to a Chilean port to drop off the pair.
