NCYC anniversary brings record participation

In North Cove Yacht Club’s 40th year, more people than ever participated in the Old Saybrook, Conn.-based club’s activities, according to the club.

About 75 children participated in the Old Saybrook, Conn.-based North Cove Yacht Club's Junior Sailing Program.The club hosted the annual Eastern Connecticut Sailing Association’s Outer Light Classic Regatta June 27, in which more than 100 sailors in 21 boats competed in three race classes on marked courses in the Saybrook Breakwater area west of the outer lighthouse.

Spinnaker Class I award winners were Secret, followed by Nobody’s Girl and Arara. Spinnaker Class II winners were Wolverine followed by Sagacious and Arabesque. Canvas Class winners were Stray Cat, Hot Fudge and Prism, respectively.

NCYC co-hosted the ECSA Leukemia Cup Regatta Aug. 29 with Duck Island Yacht Club in Westbrook, Conn. Participants raced in seven classes on a course set on Long Island Sound from the mouth of the Connecticut River to Westbrook. This was the club’s first year of co-hosting this charitable event.

The NCYC Junior Sailing Program saw 75 children ages 9 to 15 participate in instructional classes and area regattas. Enrollment is open to any interested child, with anonymous scholarship funds available to cover tuition for those in need. Instruction takes place on the waters of North Cove in Old Saybrook.

North Cove Yacht Club-trained sailors who sailed at Eastern Connecticut Junior Sailing Associations regattas this summer include Peter Malinovsky and Francesca Vinciguerra of Old Saybrook at Fisher’s Island Optimist Regatta; TJ Jordan and Sean McAvoy of Old Saybrook at Sachem’s Head Regatta; William Burton, who won first place on the Optimist Green Fleet, and Reagan Mason, both of Old Saybrook at Pine Orchard Junior Regatta; Nathan Gould and Lynsey Kirby of Madison, Nora Schrieber, an exchange student from Germany, and Sean McAvoy, Jimmy Henderson, Reagan Mason, Peter and Maddie Malinovsky, Nora Schrieber, Adam Seegert, and Amy and Francesca Vinciguerra of Old Saybrook at the Stonington Harbor Junior Regatta; and Danny Ryan of Essex, Lynsey Kirby of Madison, Maddie and Peter Malinovsky, Amy and Francesca Vinciguerra, Anna Chupak and Keanna Chang of Old Saybrook at the Pettipaug Yacht Club Regatta.
