Sail thoroughbred comes up lame

As the fleet of a dozen sail racing yachts (out of initially 30) worked their way around the globe in the solo nonstop Vendee Globe race, the leading two boats were within 2,000 miles of the finish line. Then the second-place yacht suffered a catastrophic gear failure.
