Sailing couple admits to spying for Cuba

A well-known boating couple admitted in federal court last week that they spied for Cuba during the last three decades, receiving coded instructions over a shortwave radio and passing them along.

The story of their arrest was reported this summer in Soundings.

Walter K. Myers, 72, pleaded guilty to conspiring to commit espionage and wire fraud. His wife, Gwendolyn Steingraber Myers, 71, pleaded guilty to conspiring to gather and transmit national security information.

Under the plea deal, Walter Myers faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison, and his wife faces up to 7-1/2 years, according to The Washington Post.

Both agreed to give extensive debriefings to U.S. law enforcement officials before they are sentenced. No sentencing date was set.

The couple's attorney, Bradford Berenson, said in a statement after the hearing that the Myerses were not motivated by greed but spied "out of conscience and personal commitment," the newspaper reports.
