Despite warnings from locals, Swedish Olympic sailing coach Don Nordqvist, 52, drowned last week when leaving Denia Harbor in Alicante, Spain, in bad weather to check the racing area and decide whether to continue with his training program.

Strong easterly winds sustained over two days in the area created a big swell and powerful currents outside the harbor entrance. Force 8 gusts and seawater temperature of about 57 F were registered at nearby Oliva weather station.
