As people take to the water during the heart of summer, great white sharks have been spotted off beaches in both New England and California.
The first great white shark of the Cape Cod, Mass., summer season was photographed just 50 yards from the coast off Chatham.
The 16-foot shark, estimated to weigh more than 2,000 pounds, was seen hunting seals near the shore.
“I spotted a couple yesterday,” said pilot George Breen. “One was about a quarter-mile offshore and the bigger of the two was about 50 yards off.”
Meanwhile, a great white shark was spotted about 50 feet off the San Diego coastline and forced the closure of a popular swimming beach.
San Diego lifeguard Lt. Greg Buchanan told The San Diego Union Tribune that a 14-foot shark was seen by a lifeguard who was in the water at 3:15 p.m. Monday at La Jolla Shores beach.
