Sisters finish Great Loop

America's Great Loop is a 5,805-mile circumnavigation of the eastern United States. Aboard a 16-foot aluminum Duroboat powered by a 50-hp Suzuki engine, 26-year old Katie McPhail and her 22-year old sister Elizabeth finished the journey in just 84 days. They also completed the entire voyage on a single propeller.

Near drowning spurs opposition to Coast Guard cuts

When he was 16, U.S. Rep. Mark Kirk was rescued from the waters of Lake Michigan by sailors in a Coast Guard service boat. He floated in 42-degree water for about 28 minutes. He was suffering from hypothermia and was close to drowning that spring day.
