The 33 FE (Family Edition) is the new flagship of the Southport fleet, joining a half-dozen 27- and 29-foot open fishing and day-cruising boats. Riding a C. Raymond Hunt Associates deep-vee hull, the 33 FE will deliver 1.8 mpg at a cruise speed of about 30 mph.
The boat rises to plane at a flat angle and maintains that angle through all running speeds, thanks to proper placement of its center of gravity within the variable deep-vee hull, says managing director Skip Robinson. “There’s nearly no bow rise,” says Robinson, adding that the 33 FE will be arriving at dealers in July. “She rides really well at medium speeds and settles in nicely at a 33-mph sweet spot.”
The high-end center console is stable at rest, unlike some deep-vee boats, says Robinson. “When people step onto the gunwale during in-water boat shows, they are pleasantly surprised that the boat does not tip, which a lot of deep-vee boats will do,” he says.
Demand for a larger Southport was the impetus for the 33. “We had quite a few customers of our other boats asking ‘When are you going to build a bigger boat?’ ” says Robinson.
The builder designed the boat with four separate seating areas: a U-shaped bow settee with a high/low table that converts to a sun lounge, a forward-facing seat on the forward side of the console, twin helm seats and a fishing (or entertainment) center, and a stern seat that folds out of the way for access to the raised live well. The console — with an impressive 6 feet, 3 inches of headroom — has a freshwater head, sink and shower, as well as a 6-foot-long berth.
Twin 75-gallon fishboxes are under the cockpit sole’s outboard sections. For serious anglers, Southport plans to build a model with a foredeck coffin box that replaces the forward seating.
The 33 FE is a resin-infused boat. The hull is solid fiberglass, with coring added in the decks and large fiberglass parts. Standard equipment includes a hardtop, windlass and trim tabs. Options include Yamaha’s Helm Master engine control and joystick steering system and a hull-side dive door. The boat can be ordered with twin Yamaha F300s or F350s.
