Boat show shoppers rejoice: powerful choices this fall

Bertram, Boston Whaler, Chris-Craft, Grady-White, Viking and Hunt. These are just some of the big names coming at you full throttle this fall with new boats. I can’t remember a boat show season packed with new models from so many respected builders. The powerboats here will be on display at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (Nov. 3-7) and some will also be shown in Newport and Annapolis. If there were a Hall of Fame for recreational boats, these builders would be shoe-ins for induction.

The Fisherman 236 and its brother, the Freedom 235 dual console, have innovative built-in swim platform extensions on the port and starboard sides of the engine that double as boarding areas. The dual platforms allow swimmers to exit and enter the boat farther away from the engine, increasing safety. There’s a head with room to stand inside the console. Regulator 31 CC

Image placeholder title

With the 31 center console, the North Carolina builder hit a sweet spot that customers have been salivating over for several years. “The boat gives anglers and day cruisers more room than the 28, but one person can still handle her,” says Regulator president Joan Maxwell. The standard 31 comes with twin 300-hp Yamaha engines, a cockpit tackle center and a fishbox. Taking a cue from the Regulator 41, the 31 is also built with a starboard dive door and integrated forward seat backrests. With the F300s, the boat can cruise at 35 mph, getting 1.43 mpg for a range of 386 miles.

It has an improved bow area with forward-facing seat backs and armrests, and stowage compartments with better insulation. The cockpit includes a transom-width fold-out seat that can be tucked away for access to the raised bait well. Back Cove 32

Image placeholder title

The sixth boat in its fleet of Down East cruisers, the 32 serves as an ideal couples’ cruising boat capable of long-distance trips at a comfortable speed. The Back Cove’s simplicity and efficiency separate it from similar boats, says Bentley Collins, vice president of sales and marketing for Back Cove (and Sabre). With a 370-hp diesel — Yanmar or Volvo Penta — she’s expected to get about 1.3 nmpg at 20 knots, for a 217-nautical-mile range. In addition to the hardtop, the boat comes standard with a swim platform, hot water heater, trim tabs, a Side-Power bow thruster with joystick, LED lighting and a galley. There’s also a varnished cherry cabin interior and a teak-and-holly cabin sole.

Southport 33LX

Image placeholder title

Southport comes to the shows with a new model built on its 33-foot center console hull. The 33LX is a fishboat with the extra seating and conveniences typical of a day cruiser or overnighter. The boat’s forward 270-degree wraparound seating on the port side creates a lounge area. “It is Southport’s answer to the space and sociability of a dual console, while still maintaining the centerline operation, visibility and functionality of a center console,” says Southport managing director Skip Robinson. The builder is equipping her with tender-like amenities such as extra refrigeration, a summer galley, and food and beverage stowage and prep areas. Full performance numbers were not available at press time, but the company says she’ll get 1.43 mpg at 33 mph.

The iconic Bertram brand has re-emerged with a new owner, new leadership and a new design inspired by the legendary Bertram 31. The boat was designed by Michael Peters Yacht Design of Sarasota, Florida, and will initially be available in two configurations: sportfishing and cruising. Twin 500-hp Caterpilllar C7.1 ACERT diesels will serve as standard power; the first two 35s will have twin 460-hp versions of the same engine. She rides a deep-vee hull, as did the 31. Chris-Craft Commander 42

Image placeholder title

This is a completely different boat in style and purpose for the Sarasota, Florida, builder, which specializes in luxury, open sportboats. The Commander 42 has the interior accommodations of a modern express cruiser, but with a classic, lobster-yacht exterior design, says Chris-Craft chairman Stephen Julius. The design has a sun pad on the bow, a cockpit galley, berth space below for five people, a head and separate shower, teak cockpit soles and mahogany exterior trim. At just over 20 knots, you can travel 1.2 nmpg for a range of 432 nautical miles.

Hunt 72

Image placeholder title

Hunt Yachts calls the newest model in its Ocean Series a “sport motoryacht” because it commingles a motoryacht’s plush accommodations with the performance of a sport cruiser. Twin 1,920-hp Caterpillars pack the power for a mid-30-knot cruise, while automated trim tabs reduce pitch and roll. The 72 has two guest staterooms, one with an en-suite head, and a full-beam master stateroom with oversize opening ports and a head with twin sinks. Hunt prides itself on thoughtful details, such as a canvas to cover the cockpit sole, a sight tube for precise fuel readings and a mahogany boat hook mounted in the deckhouse overhead. At 20 knots, the yacht has a range of 400 nautical miles.

Viking 72

Image placeholder title

The New Jersey builder will have four new yachts at the shows: the 72 Convertible, 72 Enclosed Bridge Convertible, 48 Open and 48 Sport Tower Open. In the 72, says communications director Peter Frederiksen, “we employed all that works so well in the Viking 70 and then incorporated a new hull design, a fresh saloon and engine room upgrades.” There is more transom deadrise and displacement, Frederiksen says, but with the same horsepower as the 70, the 72 performs just as well. This four-stateroom, five-head yacht with private access to the aft stateroom through the engine room (if you want to put crew there) has a 40-knot cruise and a range of 370 nautical miles. n
