Great Yachts of Long Island's North Shore

Gold Coast Yachting

Image placeholder title

At the turn of the 20th century, the north shore of New York’s Long Island had become a desirable residential area for many businessmen who made their millions in nearby New York City.

Renowned families such as the Astors, Morgans, Roosevelts and Vanderbilts had estates along this so-called Gold Coast, and images of their yachts are collected in Great Yachts of Long Island’s North Shore (Arcadia Publishing, $17.78 paperback) by Robert B. MacKay. These beautifully crafted vessels regularly plied the waters of the north shore and bolstered the development of New York’s most prestigious yacht clubs. The book opens a window to an era long since past.
