Australian teen Jessica Watson drew international attention - and criticism - when she undertook a solo circumnavigation attempt at the age of 16. She completed her sail around the world May 15 aboard a Sparkman & Stephens 34 sloop.
"True Spirit" ($16, Simon & Schuster, 2010) is Watson's account of the voyage, featuring entries from the blog she kept during the course of her voyage from the moment she slipped lines Oct. 18, 2009 at Sydney Harbor. The book takes the reader through her fears and loneliness as she sailed through multiple knockdowns and gale-force winds to complete what she calls her dream.
Watson lives with her parents and three siblings in Queensland, Australia. http://jessicawatson.com.au.
