My River Chronicles

Rollin' on the river

Many people know of the Hudson River only through their association with New York City, but Jessica DuLong has a much broader perspective.

Her latest book, "My River Chronicles: Rediscovering America on the Hudson" ($26, Free Press, 2009) discusses how DuLong left her Web-based desk job in 2001 to work as an engineer on the diesel engines of the John J. Harvey, an antique fireboat based on the Hudson River. She details pumping river water to firefighters at the World Trade Center site during the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and breaking conventional standards of employment by entering into one of the last traditionally male career fields. DuLong also discusses the importance of the Hudson in American history and its vital role today.

DuLong is a U.S. Coast Guard-licensed merchant marine officer as well as a fireboat engineer. Her work has appeared in Newsweek International, Rolling Stone, Parenting and Today's Machining World. This is her first book. For information, visit
