Peter Isler's Little Blue Book of Sailing Secrets

Sailing tips from a pro

Peter Isler is a two-time America’s Cup winner with a collection of racing hardware in his trophy case. He shares what he has learned about sailing techniques over 40 years in “Peter Isler’s Little Blue Book of Sailing Secrets” (2011, Wiley, $19.95 hardcover, 183 pages).

The book is for competitive racers first and foremost, but the advice Isler offers will benefit even the weekend dinghy sailor. He offers a ditty bag full of lessons that range from preparing your boat to steering in head seas. Isler includes tips for reading the wind and staying out of trouble, jury rigging and reacting to fast-changing conditions.

From his sailing roots on Long Island Sound to winning the Cup, Isler explains why he sails, where his favorite sailing spots are, and talks about a near-death experience on the water.
