Nautical photographer Onne van der Wal and his wife, Tenley, spent the past two years refitting Snow Goose, their 1986 Grand Banks 32, with the goal of taking her south for the winter. On October 6, the van der Wals left their homeport of Jamestown, Rhode Island, to begin leg 1 of their journey. Snow Goose reached New York City 4 days later. Along the way the couple stopped at coastal towns on Long Island Sound, including Mystic, Connecticut and Port Washington, New York. This gallery captures some of the highlights of leg 1 in pictures. Soundings will cover Snow Goose's run south, leg by leg, as she continues down the ICW and makes her way over to the Bahamas.
