Thrifty adventure

In a time of cutbacks and economic strife, "Bucking the Tide: Making Do and Discovering the Wild New England and Fundy Coast in a $400 Yacht" ($19, Eastworks Publications, 2010) by David Buckman proves very useful to the resourceful boater.

Buckman tells the tale of how in 1976, his wife, Leigh, and his friend Cleve Smith launched a journey on Leight, a $400 18-foot wooden sloop that "leaked like a White House aide" and discovered how to enjoy all the wonders of cruising on the (very) cheap. The book is part memoir and part how-to guide.
