Travis and Debra Jones remodeled and updated their 1970 concrete block home in Punta Gorda Isles, Fla., in 2005.
“We moved to a tip lot (in 2000 on the end of a peninsula where two canals intersect) with quick access to Charlotte Harbor, a big turning basin and great water views,” says Travis Jones, who is 64 and retired from Avaya Inc., a provider of business communications systems. “We loved Punta Gorda — the community, the people and the superb boating for both sail- and powerboats.”
After Hurricane Charley destroyed their home in 2004, they bought and temporarily moved into the 1970 two-bedroom, two-bath canal-front home on the adjoining tip lot. They combined and resubdivided the two properties so each contains 1.5 lots and built a larger custom executive home on their original site.
After updating the smaller house, the Joneses rented it out for seven years. It is now on the market for $535,000. The two-bedroom, two-bath concrete block home has an attached two-car garage and a screen-enclosed 15-by-30-foot free-form swimming pool. The 19,000-square-foot corner lot abuts two intersecting canals and includes 288 feet of concrete seawall and two concrete docks. The five-minute cruise to the open water of Charlotte Harbor is deep with no bridges.
From inside the front door only a half-wall separates the foyer from the great room, which offers expansive views of their pool and the canals through three sliding-glass doors.
Between the great room and galley kitchen is a granite-topped peninsula. Custom maple cabinets and stainless-steel appliances, including a Dacor built-in oven, cooktop and microwave, line both kitchen walls. Matching glass-fronted cabinetry provides storage near the adjacent breakfast nook overlooking the canal.
Water views dominate the master suite, which occupies the corner of the house overlooking the main canal to the north and the intersection of two canals to the east. The private bath has oak cabinetry and Corian counters. A guest bedroom and a second bath overlook the front lawn.
The house has central air conditioning, electric heat and public water and sewer facilities. Annual taxes are about $5,300. City codes regulate maintenance and property appearance.
The Punta Gorda Isles neighborhood of Punta Gorda is a mix of smaller 1970s concrete block homes and newer custom-built homes of as much as 16,000 square feet. Because the Joneses are selling an oversize lot, the new owner could replace the existing house with a larger home.
Downtown Punta Gorda, the county seat of Charlotte County, has shops, art galleries, restaurants, services, a 2.4-mile harbor walk and many waterfront festivals throughout the year.
“We very much enjoyed living in that cozy house,” Debra Jones says. “So have our renters. Each left to build or buy a home in Punta Gorda Isles.”
