49 passengers aboard grounded schooner

A Coast Guard Station South Portland 47-foot motor lifeboat helped evacuate 49 passengers from a 59-foot schooner that ran aground at about 6 p.m. Saturday in Casco Bay, Maine, near Great Diamond Island.

There were no reports of any injuries and the two-masted schooner Wendameen, that takes sightseeing cruises around Casco Bay, was reported to not be taking on any water. All passengers were wearing life jackets during the entire evacuation.

The 88-foot schooner Wendameen was designed by the famed yacht designer John Alden. She was built in East Boothbay, Maine, and launched in 1912. Inactive since the 1930s, she was restored in the late 1980s and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
