MAY 4 — A New York man whose boat capsized this week on a lake was rescued because of the heroics of his dog.
The man, who is 72, was boating on LakeGilead near Carmel, N.Y., with his springer spaniel, Baxter, when the boat capsized about 1,200 feet from shore, a report in New York’s Newsday newspaper says. As the man clung to the upturned boat, the dog swam to shore and apparently ran home.
The man’s wife heard the barking and stepped outside, where she heard her husband’s cries for help, the report says. A neighbor called 911.
Two police officials who responded went to the lake to search for the man, says the report. The man was rescued after about 45 minutes in the water. He was transported to an area hospital and treated for hypothermia.
