A taste of the yachting life

A homeless man recently managed to sneak by security at an exclusive Vancouver yacht club and take an $800,000 motoryacht for a ride.

The man had been cruising aboard the Jefferson yacht, 65-foot Delirious, when officials spotted him on EnglishBay, the VancouverProvince newspaper reported. The man also apparently embraced the good life while on board.

“He enjoyed a few bottles of wine, watched TV and tried to fry a steak,” the owner of the yacht, Laurie Case, says in the report.

Employees at the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club reportedly didn’t think much when they saw the yacht leave the marina at about 7:30 a.m., the report says. It wasn’t known that the boat was missing until a friend of Case’s husband called to say he had seen the boat out on the bay.

It took five police agencies, including the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Canadian Coast Guard, to locate the yacht and apprehend the man, according to the report. The man was charged with theft over $5,000 (Canadian).
