A week dedicated to safe boating

To kick off the summer boating season safely, the United States Power Squadrons is sponsoring Safe Boating Week from May 17-23, according to a press release.

The largest organization dedicated to recreational boater education’s theme for the week will be “Boating is fun … we’ll show you how!” Roughly 45,000 members of the squadrons will be promoting vital boater safety information on the radio and TV, as well as in community forums, show booths and newspaper articles nationwide, according to the report.

Statistics from the Coast Guard show that more than 70 million Americans are recreational boaters and about 87 percent of fatalities on a boat were not wearing a life jacket. The Power Squadrons will speak to these issues and encourage boaters to visit before hitting the water this season. Other topics of discussion will include proper use of emergency flares, life preservers and fire extinguishers, according to the report.
