Advocates fight for Loran tracking

As part of the Homeland Security appropriations bill just passed by Congress, the Secretary of Homeland Security and Commandant of the Coast Guard have the authority to shut down the Loran system if they feel it is not needed as a GPS backup or for maritime safety. This could happen any time from now until January.

This letter, from Sens. Lieberman and Collins, consolidates the conclusions of many of the studies and activities during the last few years which logically conclude eLoran is required to backup GPS.
