Alleged boat thief grounded

JULY 13 —A Kentucky man was arrested in Florida Sunday after he allegedly stole a 100-foot yacht and grounded it.

Police say the 46-year-old man, who had been drinking, took the 1988 Broward from its dock in Hollywood, Fla., Sunday morning and went for a joy ride, news reports say. That ride, however, didn’t last long. After driving erratically up the ICW the man grounded the boat, named Nuova Vita, on the banks of West Lake Park about 500 yards from the dock.

Ken Stanley, who owns a boat docked near Nuova Vita, told police he saw the alleged thief, who appeared comfortable on the boat, at about 10 a.m., reports say. The man waved, so Stanley figured he must be a friend of the owner.

“I saw what I thought was a cup of coffee in his hand, but when I got a closer look, I noticed it was a bottle of Jack Daniel’s,”Stanley says in a report. “He was drinking it like he was drinking his morning coffee — right out of the bottle.”

The alleged boat thief was being held in jail on a grand theft charge, which is a first-degree felony, news reports say.
