Alone, offshore with a broken mast

A 73-year-old Connecticut man spent two harrowing days off the coast of Florida's Jacksonville Beach in a boat with a broken mast and without power.

His 35-foot single-masted sail vessel had sustained damage from heavy weather and the engine lost power, the Coast Guard said. His engine also died after violent waves tossed his boat around the Atlantic Ocean.

Rescuers said if Steg had been riding the Gulf Stream, he probably would have drifted out to sea and never been found.
