Amateur sailor details historic circumnavigation

Gerry Hughes, a 54-year-old Scotsman from Glasgow — who is a teacher by trade — became the first deaf person to sail around the world solo.

His accomplishment is the subject of a documentary on British television and he is in the process of writing a book on his life.

He recently provided some details of his round-the-world adventure to the British press, including a nervous encounter with what he believes was shark or whale repeatedly banging on the side of his hull.

“I remember being asleep one night and something hit the side of the boat. I didn’t know what, but I felt the vibration,” he told the Daily Record. “I had to get out and check along the side of the boat. There was no water coming in which was my main concern and there wasn’t any damage to the hull. But for about four hours I kept feeling this vibration, of something repeatedly banging against the boat.”
