America’s Cup could make return to Newport

Will the America's Cup return to Newport, R.I.? And could there be an economic gold mine in the race for that silver trophy?

The spectacle of America's Cup yachts flying anew across Rhode Island Sound became more than a shot in the dark after software billionaire Larry Ellison - who apparently bought Astors' Beechwood Mansion on Bellevue Avenue recently - won the 33rd America's Cup challenge on Sunday in Valencia, Spain.

BMW Oracle Racing is inviting sailing fans to enjoy unprecedented access to the America's Cup as it lands on American soil for the first time in 15 years.

The team is hosting the following public events to welcome home the America's Cup:

When: Friday, Feb. 19 4:30 p.m. PT: SFO International Terminal: America's Cup is scheduled to pass customs; there will be a photo opportunity with the team and the Cup.

Saturday, Feb. 20 11:30 a.m. PT: City Hall celebration hosted by Mayor Gavin Newsom, joined by Oracle CEO Larry Ellison, BMW Oracle Racing CEO Russell Coutts.

Sunday, Feb. 21 4 p.m. PT: The America's Cup will be on public display at the USS Midway museum on the San Diego waterfront; 5 p.m. PT: Ceremony on USS Midway hosted by Mayor Jerry Sanders, followed by a flotilla of San Diego boats to the San Diego Yacht Club.
