Amphicar: a tribute to an odd duck

Columnist Greg Zyla of GateHouse Media uses a reader’s question as a springboard to a discussion on the beloved and dwindling fleet of “Amphicars,” the floating automobile/boat hybrid that was mass-produced in Germany for a largely American audience.

Built from 1961-1968, Amphicar received its power from the then popular 4-cylinder, 43-horsepower Triumph engine. The total production came in at 3,878 vehicles, of which 3,046 were imported into the United States. To this day, Amphicar is still the one and only amphibious passenger automobile ever mass-produced.
