Capt. John Louie Dudas was looking for dolphin from the tower of the 57-foot sportfishing boat Wound Up when he saw a large dorsal fin pop out of the water.
Realizing it was a mako shark, Dudas called down to mate Robbie Ramirez and said: "Get the big rod out!"
More than four hours later, Dudas, Ramirez and six others dragged the 12-foot shark through the boat's tuna door. Using a formula based on its length and 79-inch girth, the mako's weight was determined to be 1,006 pounds.
