Asian carp threatens to put boat trip on hold

College students Cynthia Berger and Bill Carlsen are spending the year traveling by boat around "The Great Loop," the system of waterways that circles eastern North America.

Their vessel is a solar-powered canal boat and, along the way, they're studying how communities make innovative use of alternative-energy technologies. Most recently, their route took them south from Chicago along the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers.

In their ongoing log book published regularly in the college paper, the issue of Asian carp and the closed Chicago lock was on their mind.
