Aussie solo sailor asleep as yacht crashed

An Australian schoolgirl bidding to become the youngest solo round-the-world sailor was asleep and tracking the wrong vessel when she hit a giant cargo ship during a test run, an inquiry found Tuesday.

Jessica Watson, 16, left Sydney on her non-stop voyage Sunday aboard her 33-foot yacht amid concerns that she was too young to attempt the dangerous voyage.

The journey was almost scuttled by her Sept. 9 head-on collision with a 63,800-ton bulk coal carrier, just hours into a trial run to Sydney.

In its preliminary report, the Australian Transport Safety Bureau said the ship's crew had spotted Watson's yacht from some distance and tried to avoid hitting it.
