Auxiliarist saves kayaker

Barbara Schulz of the Yonkers (N.Y.) Coast Guard Auxiliary flotilla was fishing Oct. 9 off Shinnecock Inlet in Long Island when she observed two kayakers without life jackets paddling in the choppy waters of Shinnecock Bay heading for the inlet.

Suddenly one of the kayaks overturned. After several unsuccessful attempts to right the vessel, the exhausted kayaker clung for his life as the current swept him toward the inlet and ocean.

Using her training, Schulz was quick to respond.
