Block Island Race Week gets under way

JUNE 21 - Yesterday marked the beginning of the Storm Trysail Club’s Block Island (R.I.) Race Week XXI. Presented by Rolex, the biennial five-day regatta will feature 189 yachts competing in 17 classes.

Among the notable sailors competing is two-time Star Class Olympic gold medalist Mark Reynolds, who is rejoining his 2002 Farr 40 world champion team aboard Steve and Maxine Phillips’ Le Renard. Other notables include Canadian Star Class Olympic medalist Ross McDonald, who will sail aboard Groovederci, and renowned America’s Cup tactician Tom Whidden, sailing aboard Solution.

Sailors will compete for class trophies on windward/leeward courses, and around government marks and/or race committee marks. Rolex watches will be presented to the week’s top-performing yachts for each course.

Video of each day’s racing will be broadcast daily by 9 p.m. on Web site, according to organizers. Additional information and race results are posted on theBlock Island Race Week Web site.
