Boarded boater had no clothes, but a big headache

AUG. 19 - The Coast Guard took a 52-year-old Port Townsend, Wash., man into custody Tuesday afternoon after he was found standing naked on the bow of a 26-foot sailboat anchored in Sequim Bay, waving flares and making obscene gestures.

A Coast Guard helicopter was flying over Sequim Bay at about 2:30 p.m. when the crew spotted what they thought was a boat fire, according to a Coast Guard press release. When the helicopter circled back, its crewmembers saw Lynn M. Mowry on the boat, waving flares and “acting erratically.”

By the time a 25-foot Coast Guard boat arrived at the scene, Mowry reportedly was screaming obscenities and hitting his head on the deck. Coast Guard officials instructed Mowry to put on clothes, and detained him on board their boat.

He was turned over to members of the Sequim Police Department and taken to Olympic Medical Center for evaluation. The boat Mowry was on was towed to a local marina.

No charges have been filed in relation to the incident.
