The eight Cubans who attempted to defect to the United States in a 1959 Buick sedan rigged to cross the Straits of Florida have been sent back to Cuba.
Two of the three families involved in the nearly successful February crossing, intercepted by the Coast Guard 10 miles from Marathon, Fla., were repatriated. A third family, which also took part in a similar defection attempt aboard a converted 1951 Chevrolet pickup truck last July, was taken to the U.S. Naval base in Guantanamo, Cuba. Florida media outlets report the U.S. Department of Homeland Security decided the family had a credible fear of persecution if the husband, wife and son were repatriated.
