Boat collision on Long Island Sound

Rescuers were quick to respond to a collision between two charter fishing boats on the water 17 miles south of Shinnecock, a busy inlet on the south shore of New York’s Long Island.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound received a distress call via VHF channel 16 from fishing vessel Elizabeth J reporting a person in the water as a result of a collision between their vessel and the vessel Nina Marie at approximately 10 a.m. Sunday.

The Elizabeth J had completely sunk and the Nina Marie was capsized and partially submerged, but all five aboard both vessels were safely recovered, according to the Coast Guard.
