Boat show season

SEPT. 12 — Thousands of people will gather in Newport, R.I., Sept. 14 to 17 to see more than 650 boats at the annual Newport International Boat Show .

One of the largest in-water boat shows in the country, the Newport International Boat Show is held on 15 acres along the waterfront from the NewportYachtingCenter to Newport Harbor Hotel & Marina. This year’s show will also include an expansion of the Down East style boat display at Bowen’s Wharf, according to a news release.

Boats on display will range from 16 to 100 feet, the release says. There will be more than 60 new boats as well, including the Beneteau 49, Container Yachts’ Far Harbour 39, Hunter 49, Hinckley T38 R Convertible and the Viking Sport Cruiser V53. More than 800 exhibitors will also be on hand, and there will be a number of free demonstrations and seminars.

The 2006 show will also have what organizers call Focus on Fishing. This special area will be hosted by Northeast Angling and will feature fishing boats, chairs, equipment and accessories. Another special feature will be the Captain Kids program for children ages 5 to 14 with activities in, on and under the water.

The show will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Adult admission is $16 and children under 12 who are accompanied by an adult get in free. For information call (401) 846-1115.
