Four people and a dog were rescued Wednesday by St. Augustine, Fla., police when their boat began taking on water near the Matanzas Inlet, according to a police spokesman.

When Patty Alexa sailed off toward the Bahamas in a 42-foot Clipper with three friends, the last thing she thought she'd see 14 miles off St. Augustine's shore was the bottom of the boat filling with water.

"Some of them were asleep inside when this alarm started going off," Alexa said. "I went down below and saw about an inch of water. Water filled up over the top of the engine, too."
