Boat with electric outboard unveiled

With the price of fuel being constant and a painful thorn in the sides of boater, manufacturers are banking on fuel-efficient alternatives to help the marine industry’s sagging economy.

The 49th annual Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) International Boat Show, scheduled for Oct. 30 to Nov. 3, will feature the premiere of Calypso 23e, a center console boat powered by Whisper XT electric outboard as its sole propulsion, according to a recent press release. The Calypso was designed by EPower Marine, an independent boat dealer based in Boynton Beach, Fla. The Whisper XT is powered by 600 pounds of AGM dry-cell batteries that can be charged overnight by a standard 115 volt outlet, allowing the vessel to cruise at up to 8.5 mph.

“For less than $2 worth of electricity, anyone and everyone can enjoy — and afford — a relaxing day on the water,” says Capt. Todd Sims, vice president of EPower Marine in the release. “In today’s world, people are actively looking for ways to unwind while keeping costs minimal. Our customers find electric boats their answer.”

The Whisper XT features a high-performance outboard system equivalent to a 15-hp gasoline outboard motor, and the show price for the Calypso is $39,287.
