Boatbuilder Newick’s life recounted

Dick Newick, a sailor and boatbuilder known for multihulls who died last August at the age of 87, was remembered recently by a local newspaper in his home state of New Jersey.

A skinny kid who admittedly stunk at team sports, Newick more than made up for his childhood doldrums in later life by putting four of his boats in the classic Observers Singlehanded Transatlantic Race — better known as the OSTAR.

The famed boat designer had been inducted into the North American Boat Designers Hall of Fame, a select group of world-renown nautical geniuses.
