Boatbuilder was too embarrassed to call for help

A stubborn British sailor has spoken of his guilt after refusing to be rescued from his damaged boat, despite being stranded alone for nearly two months.

Matt Gill, 37, from Cornwall, England, was skippering a friend’s boat from Antigua on a solo trip when it was battered by heavy storms — leaving a broken mast and damaged autopilot and communications equipment.

Although there was an emergency beacon on the 40-foot catamaran, the skipper decided against using it, preferring to get back by himself.
