Boater dies of CO poisoning on board

One person died and several more — including first responders — were treated for carbon monoxide exposure on a boat Sunday afternoon in Benton Harbor, Mich., according to local police.

Berrien County police say the victims were below deck on a boat when the reports came in.

One boat occupant, 53-year-old Leonard Anthony Russian of Cass County, was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Berrien County Sheriff was notified of an unknown medical emergency on a boat in Lake Michigan off Jean Klock Park. First responders located three victims in the boat and all three were transported by Medic One to Lakeland Saint Joe,” reads the official police report as reported by WSBT 22 News.

“Lakeland Hospital pronounced one victim dead on arrival, one was transported to Grand Rapids, and the third was listed as stable. Several first responders were also admitted to Lakeland Hospital for carbon monoxide exposure.”
